These games combined a more realistic hockey experience with overpowered body checking, some relaxed rules, and frequent breaks for fighting. An even more interesting prospect would be a game similar to the 3 on 3 NHL Arcade spin-off EA released back in 2009, which featured fast-paced, 3D gameplay based around powerups, skill moves, and physical play.Īnother now-defunct but beloved hockey franchise that could benefit from a reboot or reimagining would be the early-2000s era's NHL Hitz. Players on Xbox and Playstation consoles are treated to a new NHL game each year, but EA Sports has so far shown no interest in making the game for the Switch (or even a watered-down "legacy edition" like they now do for the FIFA franchise). Last year's NHL 21 even included a bonus game, NHL 94 Rewind, an updated version of the vintage favorite, which really deserves a release on the Switch Online's Super NES library. That game is 2019's Super Blood Hockey, which, with its pixel art graphics and simplistic gameplay, seems to largely serve as an ultra-violent tribute to the aforementioned Ice Hockey. Though it does have a franchise mode, common in games like NHL Hockey, its storyline based around recruiting a team of prison inmates set on murdering opposing players might be a little too off-kilter for hockey purists.
When searching the Nintendo Switch eShop for hockey, there is somehow still only one relevant result, now over four years into the console's lifespan. Using the Nintendo Switch Online service, players can access the NES library of early Nintendo games, which includes the original Ice Hockey from 1988. If Switch users want some ice hockey action, they really only have one option: go retro.
